But, be careful in case you are upgrading using internet and have other linux distro installed and are using Grub from it. The process will not work. Better produce a CD/DVD and install as usual.

I don't even see Xfce as a "step down from GNOME 2". Perhaps there are more "actions" in the Object sense that you can do more readily in GNOME 2 than you can in Xfce, but to me, Xfce, in usability, beats KDE, GNOME 2, GNOME 3, and also LXDE, which is fine, but quite limited in its feature set (barely more than a Window manager, and that is why it is so fast).

I can see why a developer would use Xfce. I am no longer a developer, but I still have development-like tendencies in the things I do and the tools that I use. Xfce is probably closest to CDE, and that is what I last used as a developer, and OSF/Motif before that. Both were very ugly in appearance, but pretty simple in design, and easy to modify. Early implementations of KDE had those qualities; Xfce still does. It is now attractive, yet still easy to get what you want out of it.

I don't think Apple's reign as Czar of the tech world is over as he'll become the Vladimir Putin of Apple. A seemingly lesser role as Chairman, but just as influential (if not more so) than the CEO.

I agree with Linus. Gnome 3 is a disaster. It might be okay for touchscreen devices (maybe), but it's not intuitive at all, and takes at least a couple of clicks extra to do almost anything. Numerous other issues with it too, but the bottom line is that I find it unusable, despite having tried to get used to it. It's not a productive environment in which to work at all. Have switched to XFCE, which I agree is not as polished as Gnome 2, but is vastly better than Gnome 3.

@Brandon You're correct, I'm using KDE 4.6 right now. I can't say I prefer it over gnome 2, I always found the latter to feel a little more lightweight, not to mention it works very very well without turning desktop effects on, I always found desktop effects to be something completely unnecessary. Oh well, KDE works for now, I am considering switching to openbox due to it's very lightweight feel. It will require some work though unfortunately

The UI metaphors used Windows, KDE (including KDE4), Gnome2, and Xfce may be a decade and a half old; but they work, and work well, for desktops and laptops. Gnome 3 looks like it was made for tablets and netbooks. I have tried Gnome 3 and Unity on Ubuntu, but I couldn't get used to it as easily as I have on KDE on Kubuntu.

@AC: Please don't flame with infantile swearing (or at least if you do, please use the proper words - "fark", seriously?)

If you'd read my comment, you'd have realised I was trying to offer a balanced (if slightly tongue-in-cheek) appraisal of Linus' complaints. I personally like Gnome 3, as is my right. I also recognise that it has many problems, such as not really supporting graphics cards without decent 3D linux drivers. In that way and others, I can see that Linus has a point and a reason to be frustrated.

However, I stand by my comments: some of Linus' problems with Gnome 3 could have been avoided by him, as you might put it, "Reading the farking manual".

@AC: "Gnome 3 is crap" must be why I've been using it for over half a year now without great pleasure. And I work on this machine (writing, programming, websites). Gnome 3 is revolutionary, but this revolution was long overdue. Windows, KDE, Gnome2, Xfce: They all use UI metaphors that are over a decade old. They just don't get any better. People are just to pigheaded to realize that. It might just take another decade.

Heavy weight Desktops are the past.

Re: Random Squire "Sorry, but this really IS a case where Linus just needs to RTFM."

Fark you, you clueless moron. Gnome 3 is crap. It doesn't work in a sane manner, because the people building it are complete idiots with regard to UI.

It's worse than useless.

Honestly I think Gnome 3 rocks, because it gets rid of all the annoying things about windows manager and provides one simple intuitive way to handle your open windows.

- Taskbar: Helpful if you have 3 windows open, that you can see on your desktop anyway. As soon as you have 5+ it gets full and it's hard to find anything. It even groups windows, which is even worse, because it takes more clicks to get to your target. Furthermore it takes up vertical space, especially when you add shortcuts and mini apps.

- Desktop: Desktop Icons SUCK. They take up resources and are inaccessible when you have a couple of windows open. In Gnome 2 my desktops always ended up in chaos. The activities mode is much better because it not only displays your shortcuts but also your open windows and available programs. Switching to your Desktop just to start a program is insane.

- Start menu: In Gnome 2 I rarely ever used the Start menu, mostly shortcuts. Nevertheless it took up 1/3rd of my Application bar. The organisation in Gnome 3 is much better, you can see more information in the full screen menu and it has a marvelous search function.

Gnome 2 had more features, but most of the features were implemented poorly. Please, try Gnome 3 at least for a month at work and see how much efficiency you really gain.

It's sad but both Gnome and KDE screwed up on their NG releases. Sad to say but Linux takes pride on not changing too much, so it's biggest two DEs decided it would throw a curveball at all of it's users. Just like the Windows platform a lot of us wanted to escape really.

Sorry, but this really IS a case where Linus just needs to RTFM. Some of his criticisms are valid, but the bit about clicking on a programme icon on the left-hand dock only to find it brings up your existing window, not a new one? Anyone who took some time to read up about Gnome 3, because it was OBVIOUSLY going to be a substantially different experience, would have found that by right-clicking on an icon you can bring up a new window of an already-running app.

If he wants to use Xfce that's fine, there are plenty of good reasons, but it feels distinctly like he's using his fame and massive influence simply as trolling-power.

Hi Randy,

I agree, Flash sucks. See my column about it:

http://jimlynch.com/index.php/2010/04/07/why-flash-sucks/

I'm seeing more and more HTML5 sites popping up. Or I should say sites that have switched to HTML5 or who are at least making their content available to iPad/iPhone users.

Over time, hopefully folks on Linux won't care about flash at all.

I'm not a huge Apple fan, but I do own a MacBook. At the same time, I have five PCs which all run different versions of Windows and Linux. I'm all for Apple's boycott of Flash. Flash itself is a proprietary format that needs to be replaced by HTML5 quick. I think Apple's arrogant Safari HTML5 site was only a proof of concept for the power of HTML5.

Adobe recently stopped releasing the Linux 64-bit version of the Flash plugin. This means that in order for a 64 bit Linux user to watch use Flash, they have to find extremely hacked up work-arounds. The problem isn't that people are using 64-bit Linux. The problem stems from websites utilizing this proprietary format.

This really is idiocy. Tonight I felt like watching Gladiator. First I tried iTunes - not available. Then Amazon. Then Netflix. So, wait......the ONLY way I can watch this movie tonight is to watch a pirate copy hosted in China.....well, smart move, Hollywood....that's like saying, hey you love Cheese Balls, but we don't want to sell them to you in the grocery store right now, because we're selling them in the mall which is forty miles from where you live and only opens on Tuesdays, so the only way you're getting cheese balls is to steal them from the warehouse around the corner which leaves the doors unlocked all night. Well great. Thanks. I will.

[...] Think you bought a copy of Orwell’s 1984 or Animal Farm for your Kindle? Think again. This week in a move that would make George himself say “I told you so,” Amazon remotely deleted copies of these Orwell classics from hundreds of Kindles. Though Amazon credited buyers’ accounts for original purchase price, Kindle owners are rightfully pissed. [...]
