KDE User Learns the Virtues of Gnome

Heh,heh. Gnome users gotta love this article: A KDE user falls in love with Gnome! Well okay, “falls in love” is a bit strong but you get the idea. It’s nice to see someone as open-minded as this guy though. Good for him.

Gee…this is like the Mac OS! It’s got the little menu bar at the top, along with the little icon in the top right corner that you can use to select among the various applications that you have up and running. Quite a contrast to Kde, and their Windows idiom with its start menu and apps in a taskbar across the bottom. Naturally, the default gnome stuff has the apps at the bottom too, but somehow this is different. Even the clock in the top right corner and volume control reminds of the Mac OS. I guess the nautilus people did their job well. I’m struck by the double click of an app that causes that little square to go rapidly out from the icon to tell you that you did something.

As far as the polish goes, I think I might have to give it Gnome over kde…I like the icons better, though they aren’t as colorful. The kde icons are cartoonish by comparison, but then again, I like the extra colors.

As fun as it is to talk a bit of trash now and then between advocates of these desktops, I’ve always thought that they’re both pretty damn good. But somehow Gnome just floats my boat more. KDE does seem a bit garish and cartoony then Gnome. Gnome feels cleaner and…saner…somehow to me than KDE.

But to each his own. In a pinch I could use KDE and be quite happy with it.
