Apple and Games
I don’t own a Mac but I’d sure love to see more games out for Apple computers, as well as more for Linux based PCs.
Essentially, for every great game that there is for Mac OS X, there are still two for Windows. Why? It’s purely a question of user base. There are more Windows users than Mac users, so the Mac versions of all the above games will be released six months after the Windows version, or sometimes, not at all. Everyone knows this.
Apple knows this too. Unlike many other game companies, however, Apple is in a position to do something about it. First of all, Apple has a lot of cash lying around from iPod sales. Secondly, Apple has many talented programmers. Third, Apple has a lot of good hardware to work with like the PowerPC G5 and high-end graphics cards, and on the software side, OpenGL, Quartz, Core Audio, Core Image, and many other components of Mac OS X.
It really stinks that Windows still dominates computer gaming as much as it does. Let’s face it, if you’re a gamer than access to a Windows based PC is really necessary if you want the widest range of games possible. Apple’s computers and Linux based computers just don’t have a wide enough selection of games.
Yes, I know about Transgaming for Linux and it’s fine for what it is. But it doesn’t answer the long term need for more gaming on Linux. Consoles are fine but some of us prefer playing PC based games and just aren’t interested in buying a separate machine for the living room.
Unfortunately, Windows is still where it’s at as far as gaming goes.
