BitTorrent and Bandwidth

Wow! Who knew BitTorrent was responsible for 35% of traffic on the net?

According to British Web analysis firm CacheLogic, BitTorrent accounts for an astounding 35 percent of all the traffic on the Internet — more than all other peer-to-peer programs combined — and dwarfs mainstream traffic like Web pages.

That’s pretty damn amazing if you think about it. It is a great way to share files though, hopefully just legal ones. If you’ve ever downloaded a Linux distribution via BitTorrent you know that it usually works very well. So well that more and more distros are becoming available via BitTorrent.

As far as the illegal stuff goes, that’s an unfortunate thing that I don’t think is going to go away…even if Hollywood breaks out the lawyers and starts suing people. No doubt they’ll try but I don’t think it will do them much good in the end.

If you’re a real fan of an artist’s music or movie or whatever, save up the cash and buy a copy. The folks that produce that stuff do deserve to get paid. Ideally you should try buying it directly from them if they have a web site, so they get all of your cash rather than record companies and other parasites.
