So I Installed Boxee On My Apple TV
Boxee was very easy to install on my Apple TV. I wrote a column for ExtremeTech about it.
It’s working well and it’s making me wish that Apple TV would incorporate a lot of its features. Seriously. Apple needs to open up Apple TV to other developers or something. I suspect we’d see a lot more cool stuff available for it than the functionality it currently has.
Please note that you don’t need an Apple TV to run Boxee though. You can run it on a Mac or on an Ubuntu based PC. No Windows version yet but I’m sure one will come soon.
I really like the content from Hulu and CBS as there’s a lot of movies and TV shows that I let run in the background while I work on my computer. And it’s all free. A few commercials but I can live with them as I don’t have to store the content locally and there’s plenty to choose from. It’s certainly no worse than cable TV for the most part.
I have noticed a bit of jerkiness in the video here and there but I suspect that’s a site specific thing and not necessarily Boxee’s fault. Hey, it’s streaming so it’s not going to be perfect, ever. I still love it though. I have Star Trek the Original Series running right now on my HDTV. It’s not in HD but it still looks and sounds pretty good.
Enjoy the blog? Feel free to leave a tip by buying me a cup of coffee. Thanks!
