Apple TV 2.3 Update Disables Boxee

Just a heads up for anybody who might not have updated their Apple TVs yet. Don’t do it until the new patch from Boxee is out. The Apple TV 2.3 update breaks Boxee and you won’t be able to use Boxee on your Apple TV if you update it to 2.3.

There’s a thread about this already in the Boxee help forum. Apparently there is a Boxee patch on the way to fix this problem but don’t update your Apple TV until after it’s released if you want to continue using Boxee.

Swiftly developed in response to Apple’s new software, the new Boxee patch is already undergoing testing, and the Boxee crew will let people know as and when the new version of the software – which should work correctly with the updated model of Apple set-top box – is available. We hope to be able to let you know here.

Meanwhile, the team is warning Boxee users not to upgrade their Apple TV if they want to continue using the software, which adds a host of handy features to what your Apple TV is capable of.

Of course I can’t help but wonder if Apple did this deliberately or not. I wouldn’t put it past them. No doubt they do not want Apple TV users to stray far from the walled garden of iTunes. But the popularity of Boxee is really Apple’s own fault. They have failed to provide the functionality that Apple TV users want and thus we are moving on to additional software that gives us all what we want.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Apple! Boxee is delivering what you should have given us already.
