Google Android Phone Sales More Than Expected

I’m glad to hear this, I really am.

According to a report published by Digitimes, HTC now believes that it will be able to ship one million G1s in the fourth quarter, which is a 40% increase over the initial 600,000 estimate. The company revised its unit forecast for the Touch Diamond as well – and now believes that it will ship 3.0 million devices instead of only 2.0 million.

I prefer an iPhone but I want Apple to have some tough competition to force them to keep innovating. We’ve all seen Microsoft stagnate for years because it didn’t have enough healthy competition for its operating systems. I don’t want to see that happen to Apple and I want my iPhone to keep getting better and better.

So let’s hope that Android powered mobile phones keep selling well and that it grows into a viable challenger for Apple. Consumers will win when companies are forced to compete.

Having said that, I’ll stick with my iPhone 3G.
