Linux Foundation Issues Tux the Penguin Credit Card

I have very mixed feelings about this: The Linux Foundation, the non-profit that supports the growth of the Linux kernel, is today announcing an affinity Visa Platinum credit card for people who want to contribute to advancing the OS through the organization’s initiatives. Reading the press release announcing the new credit card made me raise [...]

Sunbird, the Mozilla folks calendar application, is now out. Note that it’s .2 so it’s still early in the applications development but I saw an even earlier version and it seemed to work pretty well. Check it out if you need a good calendar application. The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar [...]

Best BSD for Linux User?

Interesting thread over at Slashdot, started by a Linux user interested in running BSD. We got a similar question over at the ET forum not too long ago. Check it out if you’re interested in running BSD but haven’t gotten your feet wet with it before.

OpenOffice Database: Base

Well this is good news for people who have been asking for database in OpenOffice.org. Soon OpenOffice.org will introduce a database application to its office suite. For the last couple of years, OpenOffice.org has been developing its word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation manager programs to compete head-to-head with similar software products such as MS Office, [...]

Open Source Antivirus: Clam AntiVirus

Check it out. A good alternative to existing antivirus software and it also has GUI front ends for Mac, Windows and Linux. I’m usually in Linux or, these days, in Mac OS X so I don’t worry too much about viruses. But it’s still nice to know there’s an open source solution if I decide [...]

The Ten Commandments of Open Source

It’s actually ten ways to pay back the open source community but I like my title better. You run GNU/Linux. You play games on it, surf the Net, write documents, and edit pictures, and all for free, thanks to the multitudes around the world who contribute to the open source movement. Now it’s payback time [...]

Review of Distrowatch

Good review of the distrowatch site. If you need information on a particular linux distribution, distrowatch is an invaluable resource. Check it out if you haven’t visited it already.

The Wiki Behind Wikipedia

Very cool look at what lurks behind the mighty Wikipedia. A wiki is a software platform for contributing, sharing, and managing content. Any group that has a need for a collaborative user driven content environment can benefit from using a wiki. Perhaps the most prominent example on the Web of a wiki in heavily active, [...]

Open Source VoIP Bigger Than Linux?

Seems like a bit of a stupid comparison to me. Apples and oranges and all that. LinuxWorld: A leading open-source advocate has predicted that VoIP services based on open-source software will generate more business than the Linux operating system itself Jon ‘Maddog’ Hall, the president of open-source organisation Linux International, told the LinuxWorld Expo [...]

Interview with Richard Stallman

Interesting interview. Free software means software that respects the four essential freedoms. Freedom 0: freedom to run the program; 1, the freedom to study the source code and change it; 2, the freedom to make copies and distribute them to others; 3, the freedom to publish a modified version. The GNU GPL is one free [...]

Donations for Firefox Hit $250,000

Wow! That is amazing! The Mozilla Foundation announced on Saturday that it had raised $250,000 during the 10 days of its fundraising campaign, securing donations from 10,000 individuals. The money will be used to promote the final version of Firefox 1.0 when it is released on Nov. 9. The campaign started two weeks ago [...]

GForge 4.0 Released

GForge 4.0 is out. Not something I’d need but if you’ve got a team of developers and you need to manage a project, it might be worth your while to check it out. Hat tip to Slashdot.

Advertising Firefox

Seems like a good idea to me. I hope a lot of people contribute. You can make a donation here. The more people that know about it the better its chances for wresting more market share away from IE. The Mozilla Foundation is getting ready to take the browser wars to a new front: the [...]

New in PHP 5

Dan Rubio has some thoughts on new stuff in PHP 5. The greatest change in PHP 5 comes with a complete redesign of its object model, and with it, a tighter integration to object-oriented (OO) paradigms. Previous versions’ usage of objects had one major drawback: Objects were not tightly aligned with the behavioural patterns observed [...]

OpenOffice Looking Better

One of my colleagues over at eWEEK has an interesting analysis of OpenOffice’s prospects and how it might affect Microsoft over the long haul. The open-source desktop productivity suite has increasingly been a thorn in Microsoft’s side. Born as a result of the acquisition of StarOffice by Sun Microsystems, OpenOffice.org has won a fair number [...]
